What's the difference between a hamper and a laundry basket?

A hamper stores dirty clothes where you undress; it's tall, often lidded, and stays put. A laundry basket carries clothes to and from the machine; it's low, open and has handles. For one container that does both, a rolling hamper like the Sterilite Ultra Wheeled Hamper; otherwise pair a hamper with a low basket like the Sterilite 1.5 bushel basket.

Which to choose

The difference is where each one lives. A hamper stays in the bedroom or bathroom and collects clothes for days, so it’s tall and narrow to save floor, and often has a lid. A laundry basket goes to the washer and back, so it’s low and open, with handles and a flat bottom to fold into. People use the words for the same thing.

What is a laundry hamper?

A laundry hamper is the container dirty clothes wait in until wash day. The word first meant a lidded wicker basket, which is why “hamper” still suggests a lid and a woven side, and why a picnic hamper shares the name. In Britain “laundry basket” usually means the same tall lidded thing Americans call a hamper, so a search for one turns up the other.

The table puts one of each from the same maker side by side.

Laundry hamper vs basket: tall and narrow, or low and wide

The Sterilite Ultra Wheeled Hamper stands 28.4 inches tall on a footprint 13.75 inches by 21. The 1.5 bushel basket is the reverse, only 10.4 inches tall but 24 inches long. They hold a similar amount, 70 and 53 litres, arranged in completely different ways.

That shape is the whole argument. A tall hamper takes a strip of floor you weren’t using. A wide basket takes a patch you’d walk across, which is why baskets end up on top of the dryer or stacked in a closet.

A small hamper with lid, or an open basket?

A hamper with a lid keeps the pile out of sight and pets out of it. It also keeps damp in, so a wet towel in a closed hamper dries slowly. Sterilite’s answer is ventilation: the hamper’s sides are full of slots, and owners say it keeps clothes from smelling musty.

Baskets never have lids, because you need to see and reach what’s in them.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners like that it's slim, light and ventilated, and that the lid keeps the room tidy.
  • Negative: Several report a wheel breaking or coming off, and a few report cracks near the handle within months.

Carrying a laundry basket with handles

This is where a basket earns its place. The 1.5 bushel basket has grips moulded into all four sides of its rim and weighs about a pound and a half empty. You can carry it by the ends down a hall, or on one hip up the stairs.

A hamper is awkward to carry full. That’s why rolling hampers exist: the Sterilite has a pull-up handle and wheels for the trip to the washer, and side handles for when there are stairs in the way. Its wheels are also its weak point, which is worth knowing before you make it your only container.

What owners say

  • Positive: Half the owners who wrote reviews call it sturdy, and several have used the same baskets for ten years or more.
  • Negative: A few report the rim cracking or a handle snapping within weeks, so some baskets clearly come out thinner than others.

Laundry basket vs hamper: can one do both?

Sort of. A rolling hamper replaces the basket for the trip there, but you still want something open to fold clean clothes into, unless you fold straight onto the bed. A basket can stand in for a hamper in a dorm or a small bathroom, but it sits wide and open in the middle of the floor.

My advice for most homes is a hamper where you undress and one basket per household for the trips. If floor space is the problem, make the hamper slim rather than doing without the basket.
