Best divided laundry hampers

Every pick has two or more sections. Ranked by Amazon sales in their category, best seller first.

  1. Two 46 litre pull-out bags under a slatted shelf rated for 44 lb, for detergent or folding, on a 0.8 inch steel frame.

  2. Two mesh bags with handles under one flip-top lid, in 600D water-resistant polyester held upright by eight rods and stiff panels in the lid and base.

  3. A 100 litre two-compartment cart on an iron pipe frame, rolling on four quiet wheels with two brakes. The fabric comes off to wash.

  4. 150 litres in two sections on four swivel casters, two that lock, with a flip-top lid and liners that go in the washing machine.

  5. Tote bags with carry handles and a helper handle on the base for tipping them out, which drop back into place on their own.

  6. Woven water hyacinth with a separate hinged lid over each side and a cloth bag in each, so it looks like furniture.

The Simple Houseware double hamper suits most bedrooms: two bags under one lid in 23 by 13 inches. The other five add wheels, a shelf, totes that tip out or a woven finish, and two of them need more than 24 inches of wall.

How to choose a divided laundry hamper

Lid or no lid. A lid keeps the pile out of sight and the smell in, which matters in a bedroom or bathroom. Open carts are quicker to drop clothes into, so they suit a laundry room or closet.

Wheels. A full 2 section hamper is heavy to lift, so if the washer is down a hall, wheels save carrying it. If it’s up or down a flight of stairs, you’ll carry one bag at a time anyway, and bags with handles matter more than wheels.

How the bags come out. Two separate bags let you take the darks and leave the lights. Handles make them easier to carry, and the Fzzcvo’s and StorageWorks’ fabric goes in the washing machine.

What holds it up. Fabric hampers stand on rods, a frame or stiff panels. The more of them there are, the less it slumps when one side is full and the other empty.

Will a divided laundry hamper fit?

Divided hampers are long and narrow, so they want a stretch of wall rather than a corner. Measure the wall, then the depth you can spare in front of it.

fits tight too bigFrom each maker's published dimensions. Yes means at least half an inch to spare. The space columns use the long side; the depth column uses the short side.

Divided laundry hamper with a shelf on top

The VASAGLE turns a sorter into a piece of laundry room furniture, because the shelf gives you somewhere to fold or keep the detergent. Below it, the two bags pull out like drawers. Each is held by hook-and-loop and has a plastic panel in its base, so it doesn’t sag as it fills.

It stands on four adjustable feet, which helps on an uneven laundry room floor. Being 28.8 inches long, it needs a 30 inch space, and some owners found the bags smaller than they pictured. Compare 46 litres a side with the hamper you use now before you order.

What owners say

  • Positive: About 9,700 ratings average 4.5. Owners say it's well made, easy to assemble and holds a lot of weight.
  • Negative: Some find the bags smaller than they expected, and one says the materials feel cheap.

Best divided laundry hamper with a lid

If you just want a good 2 section laundry hamper for a bedroom, this is the one. At 23 by 13 inches it fits a 24 inch space and a shallow nook, and one flip-top lid covers both sides. The bags lift out separately, so you can take the darks to the machine and leave the lights.

It’s the best seller here by a long way, with over 35,000 ratings, and what owners argue about is the frame. Rods and stiff panels hold the fabric up, and most find it keeps its shape, but some call it wobbly and one glued the rods in place after two months. Simple Houseware doesn’t publish the capacity.

What owners say

  • Positive: Over 35,000 ratings average 4.4. Owners say it's easy to put together, suits small rooms and kids' rooms, and like the bags lifting out.
  • Negative: Others call it wobbly; one hot-glued the support rods in place after two months, and one's bag stained after three years.

Laundry hamper divided in two, on wheels

For a laundry room or a walk-in closet, the StorageWorks is the simpler choice: an open cart you drop clothes into and roll to the machine. With no lid, the pile is on show, which matters less in a room nobody else sees.

At 13.85 inches deep, it only just fits a 14 inch nook. The fabric comes off the iron frame to wash, and owners like how easily it rolls. Check the frame when it arrives, since one owner’s had a cracked bar that wouldn’t hold its screw.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners praise the easy assembly, the sturdy frame and roomy bags, and say it rolls easily to the laundry room.
  • Negative: A few say the fabric is thin or it's too small for a family, and one received a cracked bar that wouldn't hold its screw.

Rolling divided laundry hamper with a lid

Most rolling sorters are open carts, so the Fzzcvo is the one to get if you want a lid as well as wheels. That makes it a bedroom hamper you can still push down the hall to the washer. It’s also the biggest here, at 150 litres.

The catch is the frame. The frame is fabric on four fibreglass rods rather than metal, which keeps it light. With about 260 ratings, there’s also less of a record, and owners are split on how long it lasts. Allow 15.5 inches of depth.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners say it's easy to set up, the poles slot into the corners, and it rolls well.
  • Mixed: Opinions split on size and durability: some find it smaller than expected, and some say it fell apart quickly.

Divided laundry hamper that empties in one go

The Tota solves the fiddly part of a divided hamper, which is getting the bags out and back in. Each side is a tote you carry by its handles and tip into the machine by the handle on its base. Then it drops back into the basket and finds its place without clipping.

At 90 litres it holds less than the others, so it suits one or two people who wash often. Like the Simple Houseware it has one lid over both sides, but it’s 2.6 inches deeper, so it won’t go in a 14 inch nook. Putting it together is the common complaint, and several owners say it takes a strong grip, so it’s worth having help on hand.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners like the design and say the bags are easy to take out on laundry day.
  • Negative: Assembly divides owners: several call it hard work that needs a strong grip, and some say it comes apart in use.

Separated laundry hamper in wicker, with two lids

If the hamper lives on show in a bedroom, the Casafield looks the least like laundry. Each side has its own hinged lid, so you can open one without the other, and its own cloth bag that comes out.

Casafield says the woven hyacinth can smell earthy at first and should air for a few days before you use it; one owner says the smell went quickly. At 24.25 inches long, it’s a quarter inch too long for a 24 inch space.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners say it's well made, looks more expensive than it is, and like the two sides for separating loads.
  • Mixed: One noticed a strong smell at first that went away quickly, and isn't sure about the linen bags once they're full.
