Every pick publishes its full dimensions and a load rating or capacity, is sold on Amazon under the same model number, and has enough owner reviews to show how it holds up. That cost some popular hampers their place. StorageWorks’ 160 litre basket sells well, for one, but has too few reviews to judge.

None of these was tested by us. The picks rest on the makers’ specs and on what owners report, and where those disagree, or a maker leaves something out, the section says so.

Big laundry basket with wheels

Get this if your household washes several loads at once. At 190 litres it holds about twice the Seville cart, and its steel frame is rated for 110 lb, the highest here. The bag is coated with PVC inside and clips to the frame, so it lifts out to carry to the machine. Like the Seville cart, it has two casters with brakes.

The cost is floor space, since it’s round and needs a two-foot circle. Read its reviews with care, too. They average 4.9, but they cover every size from 70 to 240 litres, and none below four stars appears. So they tell you owners find it easy to build, not how the biggest size lasts.

Plastic laundry basket with wheels and a handle

This is the only pick here with a lid, and the only one made to be carried as well as rolled. A handle pulls up from the back like a suitcase’s, and the handles in its sides let you lift it up a flight of stairs.

Its weak point is the one plastic hampers share. About one in seven owners rate it one or two stars. Their reviews describe wheels snapping off, cracks by the handle and a lid that broke, and one says it tips over when full. Others have had theirs for years. So buy it for the lid and the stairs, not to roll a heavy load every day. At 2 bushels, about 70 litres, it’s also the smallest of the three main picks.

Amazon’s listing for the single hamper gives smaller dimensions than Sterilite’s own page, at 19.6 by 12.9 by 28.1 inches. The maker’s figures are the ones used here.

Best hamper with wheels

If you have about 19 inches of floor each way, this is the one I’d get. It’s the commercial-style canvas cart in its simplest form, a steel wire frame holding a canvas bag. Seville rates it for 100 lb, the most here after the much bigger SONGMICS, and its 3.4 cubic feet works out to about 96 litres.

Two details matter more than the specs suggest. The frame is open, so the bag breathes, which suits a hamper that sits full for days. And while Seville’s own page lists only the canvas handles as removable, a retailer’s answer to a buyer says the whole bag comes off, which is what lets you wash it.

• Positive: Rolls easily even when fully loaded, say about a third of the owners who wrote reviews.
• Negative: One reviewer with arthritis couldn't fasten the snaps that hold the liner.

Laundry hamper wheels and frames: what fails first

Across these hampers, owners complain about the same parts: the wheels, and whatever holds them to the body.

• Plastic bodies put the wheels on the plastic. On the Sterilite, the most common complaint is a wheel breaking away from the body, and a crack near the pull-up handle is the second.
• Steel frames with rubber casters draw the fewest complaints. Among the Seville cart’s owners, nobody reports a broken caster.
• Soft frames sag. SpaceAid’s 100 litre rolling hamper, with a bamboo frame and fabric sides, rates 3.6 out of 5, and owners mostly say it feels flimsy or complain about the wheels.
• Two locking casters are worth having on a hard floor. Both steel-frame picks have them; the Sterilite doesn’t say it has any.

Do laundry basket wheels work on carpet?

One SONGMICS owner says theirs rolls nicely on carpet, without saying which size or what kind of carpet, and none of the other owners mentions carpet. Small casters sink into thick pile, and none of these makers gives a wheel size except Seville, at 2 inches. On deep carpet, expect to push harder than on a hard floor.

Can you take rolling laundry baskets up the stairs?

Of the three main picks, only the Sterilite is made for it, with handles moulded into its sides and an empty weight light enough to lift. The Seville cart weighs 8 lb empty, and its only handles are the two canvas ones on the bag. The SONGMICS is too big to carry full, but its bag unclips, so you can take the washing down in that and leave the frame upstairs.

Laundry hamper with lid and wheels

For a narrow gap, the three above are all too wide. This SpaceAid has a lid and wheels in only 8.75 inches, so it fits between the washer and the wall or beside a toilet. Its handle sits at hip height for pulling it along. The body is fabric on a bamboo frame, which is light and quiet on a hard floor but not one to lean on.

With 10.5 inches to spare, the Vincona slim hamper is about an inch wider and holds 13 more litres, with brakes on two of its four wheels. Its frame is metal rather than bamboo, under 600D Oxford fabric, so it’s the one to choose if the SpaceAid’s softer build worries you.

Lid or no lid on a laundry basket with wheels?

A lid keeps smells in and clothes out of sight, but it also traps damp. The Sterilite gets around that with vents along its sides, and owners say it stays fresh. The Seville cart and the SONGMICS have no lid at all, so their open frames let the bag breathe. If damp towels go straight into your hamper, an open one is the safer place for them.
