Which wall mounted clothes drying rack should I get?

For most laundry rooms, the Zetez 31.5 in wall rack, about 13 feet of line on five rods, rated to 60 lb into studs. For a long wall, the Vikaqi 40 in wall rack. For a narrow spot, the BAKON 23.6 in wall rack. For hangers only, the Ithywat folding hanger rack.

Best wall mounted drying racks

Every pick screws to a wall and folds flat. Ranked by Amazon sales in their category, best seller first.

  1. Six stainless steel rods across 40 inches, the widest fold-down rack here, rated to 60 lb. Sheets and towels hang without folding, and it comes with a drilling template.

  2. About 13.2 feet of drying line on five aluminium rods, plus 10 hooks and a bottom rail, in 31.5 inches of wall. Rated to 60 lb when screwed into studs.

  3. Four aluminium rods in 23.6 inches, rated to 60 lb, with four knob hooks that still work when the rack is folded flat. Screws, anchors and a template in the box.

  4. Three arms that fold out to 51 inches and turn 360 degrees, with 18 loops for hangers, so you can point the drying space along a wall or out into the room. Folded, it's 12 inches long.

  5. A single bar for about 10 hangers that folds to 0.4 inch deep, and it can go up with adhesive on a door, tile or glass instead of screws.

  6. Nine staggered rods that pull 15.7 inches out from a 16.5 inch wide base, about 11.8 feet of line, so it fits a strip of wall too narrow for a fold-down rack.

The Zetez 31.5 inch rack suits most laundry rooms: it fits above a washer and gives the most line for its width. The other five are for a longer or narrower wall, for hangers rather than rods, or for a door you can’t drill. What separates them is how much wall they need and how much weight they’ll really hold.

Your wall has no studs where you want it; the rating depends on them.

Of the fold-down racks, this one hangs the most for the wall it takes, because it adds a rail and hooks under the rods for hangers, socks and underwear. That makes it the one to put above a washer when you want most of a load off the floor.

The 60 lb rating depends on studs, though. On plasterboard anchors alone, load it lighter and expect to upgrade the fixings: one owner’s screws slid back out of the anchors in the box.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners call it easy to install and a good fit for a small laundry room, and like the spacing between the rods.
  • Negative: Some say it has to be worked into place to close, and one found the screws slid out of the included anchors and bought better ones.

You have less than 40 inches of clear wall, or you want to pull it open with one hand; an owner says it takes two.

Forty inches is long enough for a bath towel without folding, or a sheet folded once, and that’s the reason to choose it over the Zetez. It’s also the best seller among wall racks on Amazon, with about 1,500 ratings averaging 4.6.

Most owners say the drilling template makes mounting easy, but one careful owner found two traps. The template is about 7/8 inch shorter than the bracket on each side, so don’t line it up against a wall edge or tile. And the 6 mm hole in the instructions is for the anchors, not for screwing into a stud.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners say the template makes it easy to mount level, and that it feels sturdy and folds almost flat.
  • Mixed: One owner found the template about 7/8 inch short of the bracket each side, and the anchors poor. Another says it takes two hands to open.

You dry full loads; four rods isn't much line, and some owners say the rods jam when opening and closing.

Under 24 inches of wall, this is the fold-down rack that fits. Its knob hooks are the useful extra, since they still work with the rack folded, so a coat or a damp swimsuit can hang without opening it.

Four rods suit a few shirts or a load of delicates rather than a family’s wash. If you need more line in a narrow space, the SONGMICS accordion below fits nine rods into 16.5 inches, but it holds far less weight.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners say it's sturdy, easy to drill for with the template, and suits a very small laundry room.
  • Mixed: Split on the action: some say it opens and closes easily, others that the rods jam and need straightening, or feel loose pulled out.

Skip it if
You want to lay sweaters flat or drape trousers over a rod; it's built for hangers, and an owner says the last section bends under a full load.

The JAUREE works differently from the fold-down racks. Each of its three arms turns a full circle, so the drying space can run along the wall or swing out into the room. The loops along the arms hold hangers in place in a draught, and a retractable towel rod sits underneath.

Its 150 lb rating is more than twice the fold-down racks’, but JAUREE doesn’t say how it was measured, and one owner says the end of an arm bends under a load. Anchors for drywall and for solid walls are both in the box.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners say it's sturdy, easy to put up and folds out of the way against the wall; one says it takes up to 18 hangers.
  • Negative: One owner says the last section of an arm bends when used, which bunches the clothes together.

You need more than a few shirts' worth of space; owners often call it smaller than they expected.

This is the only rack here you can put up without drilling. Ithywat supplies adhesive for smooth surfaces such as a door, glass or tile, and screws for a plaster wall. It’s a single bar for shirts coming out of the dryer on hangers, or for a closet, not for a whole wash.

The arm folds out 12 inches from the wall. Several owners say it’s smaller than they pictured, so check its 14.37 inch length against your space before you order.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners say it's easy to install and almost disappears when folded, which frees up closet and laundry room space.
  • Negative: Several say it's smaller than they expected.

You dry heavy wet towels or jeans; it's rated for 22 lb, the least here.

An accordion rack pulls straight out instead of folding down, which is how this one fits nine rods into 16.5 inches of wall. That makes it the choice for a strip beside a door or a window where nothing else fits.

What it gives up is strength. At 22 lb it’s for shirts, underwear and delicates more than wet jeans, and the anchors it comes with are for drywall only.

What owners say

  • Positive: Owners say it works well in tight spaces and is easy to install.
  • Negative: Others find it smaller than expected, or stiff and tricky to open and shut. About one in ten rate it one or two stars, the most here.

How to mount a wall clothes drying rack

  1. Find the studs. The fold-down racks are made to screw into them: Vasunray and SOLVESTIS space their holes 16 inches apart to meet studs, and Zetez’s 60 lb rating assumes them.
  2. Check the height. Hold the rack open where you want it. Measure the longest thing you’ll dry against the space below it, down to the floor or the top of the machine.
  3. Mark the holes with the maker’s template, and level it before you drill. On the Vikaqi, an owner says the template sits about 7/8 inch inside the bracket on each side.
  4. Screw into the studs wherever the holes line up. Where they don’t, use the anchors, and keep loads lighter. Step Up notes that drywall and stucco may need drilling for anchors, and SONGMICS’s anchors are for drywall only.

Which to choose

For racks that stand on the floor, see folding clothes drying racks, and for heavy loads, heavy duty drying racks.
