Which dehumidifier should I get for drying clothes?

The KNKA 80 pint is the best seller with a clothes drying mode, rated for up to 5,500 sq ft. For a small room, the GoGuess 21 pint; for a low unit that fits beside furniture, the VEAGASO.

Best dehumidifiers for drying clothes

Every pick a compressor dehumidifier whose maker says it dries clothes. Ranked by Amazon sales in their category, best seller first.

  1. Energy Star rated, with a DRY mode for clothes, a 1.45 gallon tank and a 6.56 foot drain hose, on casters.

  2. A TURBO mode for clothes in a unit 7.2 inches deep, for a bathroom or bedroom with the door shut.

  3. A DRY mode its maker says is for delicate clothes indoors, in a low unit 12.5 inches tall that sits beside furniture.

  4. A 24-hour timer to start or stop it while you're out, two fan speeds and a mode for clothes, at 52 pints a day.

The KNKA 80 pint is the one most people buy, and it has a DRY mode its maker sets aside for clothes. Each of the four has a clothes drying mode in its maker’s words and a hose so it can drain on its own. They differ in size: the GoGuess is for a bathroom or bedroom, and the KNKA and COSTWAY are for a basement or laundry room. They’re in the order Amazon ranks them by sales.

You want it light enough to carry upstairs; at 80 pints it's the biggest here.

The KNKA is the pick for a basement or laundry room where the wash hangs most weeks. KNKA rates it at 80 pints a day in peak summer conditions and 56 in a typical basement, and it’s Energy Star certified. One owner bought it partly to speed up drying hanging clothes.

The tank is the weak point if you don’t use the hose. One owner calls it small, and another notes it has no handle. KNKA says to stand it upright for 24 hours before first use.

What owners say

  • Mixed: About 1,300 ratings. Owners say it's quiet and easy to set up; one bought it to dry hanging clothes, others say the tank is small.

You dry several loads a week; owners say the tank needs emptying more than once a day.

The GoGuess is for drying a rack in a bathroom or bedroom with the door closed. It’s 7.2 inches deep, slim enough for a bathroom corner. Its TURBO mode is the one GoGuess names for drying clothes faster.

At 21 pints it fills its 2.3 litre tank quickly in a damp room, and some owners empty it several times a day. The hose fixes that if there’s a drain nearby.

What owners say

  • Mixed: About 1,000 ratings. Owners say it works in rooms up to about 1,200 sq ft, runs quietly and sets up fast; some empty it several times a day.

You won't run the hose; the 0.53 gallon tank is the smallest here.

The VEAGASO is low rather than tall, 12.5 inches high, and VEAGASO says its slim shape fits beside furniture in any room. VEAGASO says its DRY mode speeds up drying delicate clothes indoors. Owners say it took a room from 80% to 50% humidity in five or six hours.

The 0.53 gallon tank is the smallest here, and some owners say they empty it three or four times a day. Others say it stopped working after about a year.

What owners say

  • Mixed: About 3,100 ratings. Owners say it took a room from 80% to 50% humidity in five or six hours; some say it stopped working after a year.

You want a long owner record; it has only a few dozen ratings.

The COSTWAY is Energy Star certified, like the KNKA, but sits in the middle at 52 pints. It has a dry clothes mode, two fan speeds and a 24-hour timer, so it can run while you’re out and switch itself off. COSTWAY says it covers up to 4,500 sq ft.

It weighs 32 lb, on four wheels. It’s newer, with few ratings, and one owner says it’s too big for a small bathroom.

What owners say

  • Positive: Few ratings. Owners say it works in big spaces and is stronger than small units, but it's too big for a small bathroom.

Dehumidifier drying washing: setting up the room

  • Close the door and windows. KNKA says to keep them shut while it runs. The Reddit tip that sends many people here hung shirts in a shut bathroom with the dehumidifier, and they were dry in a couple of hours.
  • Leave space around the rack. Platform, a UK housing association, says to dry on a rack with room for air to move, not on radiators.
  • Run the hose for a full load. A rack of wet washing fills a small tank fast, and every unit here stops when its tank is full.
  • Read the pints rating with care. Makers rate pints at 95°F and 90% or 95% humidity. KNKA and COSTWAY also give a figure at 86°F and 80%, which is closer to a real room and a quarter to a third lower.

On running costs, Platform says a dehumidifier costs less to run than a tumble dryer. A commenter on the Reddit thread adds that most draw about 500 watts, but the saving shrinks if drying takes much longer.
